Name: John Brown

Company: University of Maryland Medical Center

Position: Security Officer

Age: 64

 Neighborhood: Union Square

John Brown has been a resident of Southwest Baltimore for the last five years – he currently resides in Union Square.

Last month, Brown decided to take advantage of Southwest Partnership’s Anchor Institution Community Referral Program at Workforce Wednesday at UMB Community Engagement Center. Looking to transition from his current job at the time to something with less of a commute, Brown connected with Mayor’s Office of Employment Development’s Rachel Goodrich, Career Navigator for Southwest Works, Southwest Baltimore’s community program aimed at connecting residents to good jobs and stable careers.

Brown explained to Goodrich the type of position he was looking for and together, the pair reviewed his employment history and identified several promising job opportunities for Brown to examine. With Goodrich’s assistance, Brown cleaned up his resume, applied to those jobs and was granted an interview with the University of Maryland Medical Center. Through the Southwest Partnership’s Anchor Institution Community Referral Program, we can guarantee west side residents who qualify that their application will be seen by the hiring manager. Within 2-3 weeks of applying, Brown was offered a position as a security officer at UMMC; he began his new job shortly after.
